Zhalong National Nature Reserve

Spot Introduction

Zhalong National Nature Reserve is the world’s largest nature reserve for Red-crowned Cranes, covering a total area of 210 square kilometers. It is recognized as an internationally important wetland. This reserve not only serves as a crucial habitat for rare birds like the Red-crowned Crane but also functions as a significant base for studying wetland ecosystems.

The reserve boasts a complete wetland ecosystem, encompassing various wetland types such as reed marshes, sedge marshes, lakes, and meadows. It is home to 236 species of birds, including six species of cranes like the Red-crowned Crane, White-naped Crane, and Hooded Crane, which breed and thrive here. Every spring and autumn, tens of thousands of migratory birds stop here, creating a spectacular scene of bird migration.

As one of the earliest established wetland-type nature reserves in China, Zhalong plays a vital role in wetland protection, scientific research monitoring, and ecotourism. The reserve has established a comprehensive scientific research monitoring system, conducting research work such as bird banding and wetland ecological restoration. Simultaneously, through ecotourism projects, visitors can appreciate the natural beauty while understanding the importance of wetland protection.

Zhalong Wetland is also a significant water conservation area, playing a crucial role in regulating regional climate, purifying water quality, and preventing floods and droughts. The reserve is equipped with multiple bird watching platforms and science popularization facilities, making it an ideal place for ecological science education.
