Spot Introduction

White Horse Temple, located in Luoyang, Henan Province, was founded in the 11th year of Yongping in the Eastern Han Dynasty (68 AD). It is the first government-built temple after the introduction of Buddhism to China, known as the “origin of Buddhism” and “ancestral hall”. The establishment of White Horse Temple marks the official introduction of Buddhism into China, which is of epoch-making significance in the history of Chinese Buddhism.

White Horse Temple covers an area of about 200 mu. Most of the existing buildings were rebuilt during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The main buildings include the mountain gate, Tianwang Hall, Dafo Hall, Main Hall, Jieyin Hall, and Pilu Pavilion. The temple preserves a large number of precious Buddhist cultural relics, including the Yuan Dynasty’s painted statues, Ming Dynasty’s Eighteen Arhats statues, and Qing Dynasty’s “Tripitaka”.

White Horse Temple is named after the allusion of “white horse carrying scriptures”. According to records, the Eastern Han Emperor Ming sent envoys to the western regions to seek Dharma. The envoy met two Indian monks, Shemoteng and Zhufalan, in Dayue, and invited them to teach in China. The two monks came to Luoyang with Buddhist scriptures and statues on a white horse. The Emperor Ming built this temple for them and named it “White Horse Temple”.

White Horse Temple is not only the birthplace of Chinese Buddhism but also an important witness of Sino-foreign cultural exchanges. The temple is equipped with Buddhist temple buildings from countries such as India, Myanmar, and Thailand, forming a unique international Buddhist cultural park. These exotic-style Buddhist temples not only showcase the artistic features of Buddhism in different countries but also reflect the important position of White Horse Temple as a world center for Buddhist cultural exchanges.

In recent years, White Horse Temple has actively carried out Buddhist culture research and dissemination work. The temple has a Buddhist culture research institute, regularly holds Buddhist culture lectures and international academic seminars. At the same time, White Horse Temple also offers Buddhist culture training courses to disseminate Buddhist culture knowledge to the public.

Spot Introduction

Huashan, known as the West of the Five Great Mountains in China, is famous for its steepness and is often referred to as “the most dangerous mountain in the world.” Formed 120 million years ago, Huashan is composed of granite and characterized by steep cliffs and precipitous peaks. The highest peak, South Peak, stands at an elevation of 2,154.9 meters. The mountain features five peaks - East, West, South, North, and Central - each offering breathtaking views and magnificent scenery, making it a famous Taoist mountain and a renowned tourist destination.

Apart from its steepness, Huashan is also rich in historical and cultural heritage. Since the Qin and Han dynasties, Huashan has been a sacred place for Taoism. There are over 20 existing Taoist temples, among which Yuquan Temple, Dongdao Temple, and Zhenyue Palace are the most renowned. Additionally, Huashan is a significant birthplace of martial arts culture, and the “Huashan Sword Discussion” from Jin Yong’s novels has further popularized this famous mountain.

The natural landscape of Huashan is unique, known for its strangeness, steepness, beauty, and tranquility. Major attractions include the perilous Changkong Plank Path, Qianchi Zhuang, Baichi Xia, and Canglong Ling. The Changkong Plank Path, praised as the “First Danger of Huashan,” is a narrow plank path carved into a cliff, allowing only one person to pass through at a time, offering a thrilling experience. Qianchi Zhuang, on the other hand, is the steepest climbing path on Huashan, with a gradient close to 90 degrees, requiring both hands and feet to climb.

The scenery of Huashan varies with each season: spring brings blooming mountain flowers, summer features rolling cloud seas, autumn paints the forests in layers of colors, and winter transforms the mountain into a silver-clad wonderland. The sunrise and cloud sea views are particularly breathtaking, attracting millions of visitors every year for sightseeing, adventure, and pilgrimage.

As a national 5A-level tourist attraction, Huashan boasts not only unique natural landscapes but also preserves abundant cultural relics. There are over 200 existing cliff inscriptions, 20 ancient buildings, and 10 ancient ruins on the mountain.

Qianling is the co-burial tomb of Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi and Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty. It is the only emperor-empress co-burial tomb in China and the only tomb of a female emperor in the world, possessing extremely high historical and cultural value. Built into a mountain, Qianling impresses with its magnificent scale, covering an area of 2.4 million square meters. It is the largest and best-preserved Tang Dynasty emperor’s tomb in China.

The construction of Qianling took 23 years, adopting the unique design of “using the mountain as a tomb,” with the main peak of Liangshan serving as the main body of the tomb, embodying the concept of harmony between nature and humanity. The tomb layout is rigorous, with the sacred path as the central axis. On both sides, there are symmetrically distributed exquisite stone carvings, including 114 pieces such as the famous Wordless Stele and Shu Sheng Ji Stele, showcasing the highest achievements of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Among them, the Wordless Stele stands 7.53 meters high and weighs 98.8 tons. It was erected by Wu Zetian herself, implying that her achievements and faults would be judged by future generations.

The underground palace of Qianling remains unexplored, filled with mystery and known as the “Oriental Pyramid.” Archaeological explorations indicate that the underground palace is well-preserved and may house numerous precious artifacts. Within the tomb area, there are also 17 accompanying tombs. The excavated tombs of Yongtai Princess and Zhanghuai Prince have unveiled exquisite wall paintings and artifacts, providing vital information for studying Tang Dynasty history.

As a microcosm of Tang Dynasty politics, economy, and culture, Qianling is not only a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architectural art but also an essential material for studying Tang Dynasty history. In 1961, Qianling was listed as one of the first batch of key cultural relics protection units in China. In 2001, it was rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction, and in 2014, it was selected for the World Heritage Tentative List, further enhancing its international influence.

Lijiang Old Town, founded in the late Southern Song Dynasty, is one of the best-preserved ancient minority towns in China. It was inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List in 1997. The town, built against the mountains, covers an area of 7.279 square kilometers with a core area of 1.6 square kilometers at an altitude of over 2400 meters. Centered around Sifang Street, the town is radially laid out, with streets and alleys winding their way through the mountains, forming a unique landscape of “three mountains as screens and one river connecting them.”

The architecture of the town combines the characteristics of multiple ethnic groups such as the Naxi, Han, Tibetan, and Bai, with typical layouts like “three courtyards and one screen wall” and “four courtyards and five skylights.” Most of the houses are built with a combination of wood and earth, featuring gray tiles and white walls, carved beams and painted rafters, and exquisite wood, stone, and brick carvings can be seen everywhere. The town has over 300 well-preserved Ming and Qing architectural complexes, among which Mu Palace, Lion Mountain, and Wan’gu Tower are the most representative.

The water system of the ancient town is remarkable. The Yuhe River splits into three branches at the Yulong Bridge north of the city and then divides into countless tributaries that run through the streets and alleys, creating a unique landscape of “running water in every household and weeping willows at every door.” There are 354 bridges in the ancient town, with the highest density in the country. Ancient bridges such as the Dashiqiao, Wanzi Bridge, and Ma’an Bridge are unique in their designs and exquisite craftsmanship.

As the birthplace of Naxi culture, the ancient town preserves a complete Dongba cultural system. Intangible cultural heritages such as Dongba pictographic characters, Naxi ancient music, and Dongba painting are inherited and developed here. The “Sanduo Festival” on the eighth day of the second lunar month is the most important traditional festival of the Naxi people, during which grand sacrificial activities and folklore performances are held in the ancient town.

In recent years, the Old Town of Lijiang has struck a balance between protection and development, establishing a comprehensive protection and management system. Motor vehicles are prohibited in the Old Town, traditional buildings have been repaired and preserved, and intangible cultural heritage has been inherited and developed. Today, the Old Town of Lijiang is not only a tourist destination but also a living museum for studying ethnic minority cultures, architectural art, and urban planning.

The Temple of Heaven Park, established in the 18th year of Yongle’s reign in the Ming Dynasty (1420), was a place where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshiped heaven, prayed for good harvests, and prayed for rain. The entire architectural complex is laid out in a “circular front and square back” design, symbolizing the ancient cosmological view of “round heaven and square earth.” It is the largest and most ethically significant ancient sacrificial architectural complex in China.

Covering an area of approximately 273 hectares, the Temple of Heaven Park is four times the size of the Forbidden City. The entire architectural complex is surrounded by two sets of walls, dividing it into the Inner Altar and the Outer Altar. The Inner Altar consists of main buildings such as the Circular Mound Altar, the Hall of Imperial Vault, and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, while the Outer Altar is home to auxiliary buildings like the Fasting Palace and the Shenle Administration. The complex was built strictly according to ancient rites, embodying the philosophical idea of “harmony between nature and humanity.”

The architectural art of the Temple of Heaven can be considered a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests adopts a triple-eaved circular pointed roof, standing 38 meters high with a diameter of 32 meters. Entirely constructed of wood without using a single nail, its 28 large golden phoebe columns are arranged according to astronomical calendars such as the four seasons, twelve months, and twenty-four solar terms, reflecting the ancients’ deep understanding of celestial phenomena. The Circular Mound Altar consists of three layers of white marble circular platforms, with each layer’s number of steps being a multiple of nine, symbolizing the imperial power of “the supremacy of nine and five.”

The Temple of Heaven is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a living fossil of ancient Chinese sacrificial culture. A total of 22 emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties held 654 heaven worship ceremonies here. These ceremonies strictly followed ancient rites, including fasting, welcoming the gods, presenting offerings, and bidding farewell to the gods, demonstrating the ancients’ awe and reverence for heaven and earth. Nowadays, the Temple of Heaven Park is not only an important historical and cultural heritage but also a significant place for entertainment and leisure for Beijing citizens.

Spot Introduction

Zhangjiajie is famous for its unique quartz sandstone peak forest landform, known as “Three Thousand Exotic Peaks, Eight Hundred Elegant Waters.” Here, you can find not only spectacular natural landscapes but also rich biological resources and the cultural heritage of ethnic minorities such as Tujia and Bai.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China’s first national forest park, was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1992. The quartz sandstone peak forest here was formed 380 million years ago and has evolved through long-term geological movements and weathering erosion into the present spectacular pillar formations. The highest peak, Tianmen Mountain, stands at 1518.6 meters and boasts the world’s longest alpine passenger ropeway.

As a globally important biodiversity reserve, Zhangjiajie harbors over 3,000 plant species and 500 animal species, including rare plants like the Chinese dove tree and ginkgo, as well as protected animals such as the clouded leopard and macaque. This region also served as the inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie “Avatar,” attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists every year.

Beyond its unique natural landscapes, Zhangjiajie also preserves a wealth of ethnic minority cultures. The Tujia and Bai ethnic groups, among others, have inhabited this region for generations, shaping distinctive folk customs. Visitors can enjoy traditional performances such as the Tujia hand-waving dance and Maogusi, as well as sample authentic Tujia cuisine.
