Traveling to China, Traveling to the World

Spot Introduction

Located on the southern edge of the Kubuqi Desert, Xiangshawan is China’s largest desert theme tourist area. Here, visitors can enjoy not only spectacular desert landscapes but also a wealth of desert entertainment projects, making it a comprehensive tourist destination integrating sightseeing, entertainment, relaxation, and vacation.

Xiangshawan owes its name to the unique phenomenon of “singing sand dunes.” When the wind blows over the dunes or visitors slide down them, the sand produces a roaring sound, scientifically known as “singing sand.” Geologists have found that this phenomenon is a result of the combined effect of the special shape of sand grains and the dry climate. The round and smooth sand grains, when rubbed against each other under specific humidity conditions, create a resonance.

Covering a total area of 24 square kilometers with the highest sand dune reaching 1150 meters in altitude, this place was once an important post station on the ancient Silk Road, leaving rich historical and cultural relics. Since its development began in the 1980s, it has now established five thematic areas: Xiangshawan Scenic Area, Desert Entertainment Area, Desert Resort Area, Desert Water World, and Ecological Protection Area.

In terms of ecological protection, the scenic area adopts the sustainable development concept of “sand advancing, people retreating” and has established a comprehensive sand control system. By planting sand-growing plants and setting up sand barriers, the expansion of desertification has been effectively controlled. Additionally, the scenic area has set up a Desert Ecology Museum to educate visitors about desert ecology.

Spot Introduction

Visitors can experience unique desert activities: enjoy the desert sunrise in the early morning and feel the magnificence of the “straight smoke rising from the vast desert”; experience exciting desert surfing, sand sliding, and motocross in the sand during the day; appreciate the exquisite scenery of the “round sunset over the long river” in the evening; participate in a bonfire party at night to experience Mongolian customs. The scenic area also provides special experience projects such as desert camping and stargazing.

As a national 5A-level tourist attraction, Xiangshawan is not only a tourist destination but also an important base for studying desert ecology and conducting science popularization education. It attracts millions of domestic and foreign tourists every year to experience the unique desert style.

Spot Introduction

Located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, the Leshan Giant Buddha is a World Cultural Heritage site and home to the world’s largest stone carving of a seated Maitreya Buddha. The construction of this colossal statue began in the Tang Dynasty’s Kaiyuan first year (713 AD) and took 90 years to complete. Standing at an impressive height of 71 meters, with a head height of 14.7 meters and shoulder width of 28 meters, the Giant Buddha exudes a magnificent aura, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship of ancient artisans.

The Giant Buddha was carved into the mountainside, facing the confluence of three rivers, embodying the unique concept of “the Buddha is a mountain, and the mountain is a Buddha.” Its brilliance lies not only in its enormous size but also in its exquisite craftsmanship. The Buddha’s drainage system is particularly ingenious. Through a hidden drainage system and concave-convex surface decorations, rainwater is prevented from eroding the statue, which is a crucial factor in its preservation till today.

Visitors can explore the Giant Buddha in three ways: overlooking the entire statue from the back of Lingyun Temple’s mountain, admiring it closely along the Nine-Turn Stack Way, or gazing up at it from a boat on the river. Each perspective offers a different kind of awe-inspiring experience. Besides the Giant Buddha, historical sites within the scenic area, such as Lingyun Temple and Lingba Tower, provide valuable insights into Tang Dynasty Buddhist culture and architectural art. In recent years, the scenic area has continuously implemented protection projects for the Giant Buddha, ensuring the preservation of this precious cultural heritage through modern technological means.

Spot Introduction

The Summer Palace, originally named the Clear Ripple Garden, was first built in the 15th year of Qianlong’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1750). It is a royal garden of the Qing Dynasty and the most well-preserved royal palace garden. In 1998, it was listed in the “World Cultural Heritage List” and is known as the “Royal Garden Museum”. The garden is based on Kunming Lake and Wanshou Mountain, and is modeled after the West Lake in Hangzhou, drawing on the essence of Jiangnan gardens. It is hailed as the pinnacle of Chinese garden art.

The Summer Palace embodies the quintessence of Chinese classical garden art, skillfully employing the technique of “borrowing scenery” to integrate the peaks of the Western Hills into the garden landscape. The architectural layout within the garden is rigorous, exhibiting both the grandeur of a royal palace and the exquisite elegance of Jiangnan gardens. Structures such as the Long Corridor, the Stone Boat, and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge each possess unique characteristics, showcasing the highest achievements of Qing Dynasty architectural art. As a paradigm of Chinese classical gardens, the Summer Palace is not only a precious cultural heritage but also an important material for studying ancient Chinese architecture and garden art.

Spot Introduction

The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest water conservancy project and a significant landmark of New China’s construction. It not only showcases China’s engineering achievements but also serves as an important window to understand the natural beauty of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.

Located in the middle section of Xiling Gorge, one of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, the construction of the Three Gorges Dam began in 1994 and was fully completed in 2006. With a total length of 2,309 meters and a crest elevation of 185 meters, the dam has a normal water level of 175 meters, a total storage capacity of 39.3 billion cubic meters, and an installed capacity of 22.5 million kilowatts. It generates over 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, making it the world’s largest hydropower station.

As a century-old project, the Three Gorges Dam has set multiple world records, including the largest concrete gravity dam, the largest hydropower station, and the largest navigation lock system. The dam was constructed using a “one-stage development, one-time completion, phased water storage, and continuous resettlement” plan, which took 17 years to complete. The total investment in the project exceeded 200 billion yuan, and the total number of immigrants exceeded 1.3 million.

The dam not only provides comprehensive benefits such as flood control, power generation, and shipping but is also a unique tourist attraction. Standing on the 185-meter-high crest of the dam, visitors can overlook the magnificent scenery of the Yangtze River and experience the majestic atmosphere of the “high gorge turning into a plain lake.” The dam’s five-stage navigation lock system is a remarkable engineering feat, and the process of ships passing through the locks is breathtaking.

The Three Gorges Dam scenic area also features multiple observation points. Tanziling offers a panoramic view of the entire dam, while the 185 viewing platform provides the best spot for close-up views of the navigation locks. The Three Gorges Exhibition Hall displays the journey and achievements of the project’s construction. This place is not only a window into China’s modern engineering technology but also an excellent destination to experience the natural and cultural charm of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.
