Danxia Mountain
Scenic Spot Introduction
Danxia Mountain is a world natural heritage site, famous for its unique red sandstone landform, and is the naming place of the “Danxia landform”. The steep peaks and jagged rocks here have earned it the reputation of “the crown of world Danxia”. The total area of the scenic spot is 292 square kilometers, consisting of more than 680 red sandstone rocks, formed during the Cretaceous period from 140 million to 70 million years ago.
The landform features of Danxia Mountain are characterized by “flat top, steep body, and gentle foot”. Under the long-term effects of weathering and water erosion, its red sandstone has formed unique landform landscapes such as stone peaks, stone walls, and stone pillars. Geological wonders such as the Yangyuan Stone and the Yinyuan Stone are rare in the world, known as the “No.1 stone in the world”.
As one of China’s first world geoparks, Danxia Mountain is not only an important scientific research base but also a biodiversity hotspot. More than 2,000 species of plants and 400 species of animals inhabit here, including endemic species such as Danxia Wutong and Danxia Orchid. The scenic area also preserves ancient human sites dating back more than 4,000 years and many Buddhist cultural relics, such as the Danxia Temple, which was built in the Tang Dynasty.
Danxia Mountain is not only a tourist attraction but also a science popularization education base. It attracts many geologists and biologists every year to conduct research. Its unique landform features and ecosystems provide important evidence for studying the evolution of the earth and biological evolution. In 2010, Danxia Mountain was listed as a World Natural Heritage site as a representative of the “Chinese Danxia” series of heritage sites.
