Dujiangyan-Qingcheng Mountain

Scenic Spot Introduction

The Dujiangyan-Qingcheng Mountain scenic area, located in Dujiangyan City, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is a World Cultural Heritage, World Natural Heritage, and World Irrigation Engineering Heritage site. Dujiangyan, built in 256 BC under the direction of Li Bing and his son, is the world’s oldest dam-free water diversion project and still plays a crucial role today. Qingcheng Mountain, on the other hand, is one of the birthplaces of Chinese Taoism, known as “the serene Qingcheng under heaven.”

The Dujiangyan water conservancy project consists of three main components: Fish Mouth, Flying Sand Weir, and Treasure Bottle Mouth. These cleverly utilize the terrain and water flow to achieve automatic water diversion, sand discharge, and water diversion. This project not only solved the irrigation problems of the Chengdu Plain but also created the miracle of “water and drought obeying people’s will.” Qingcheng Mountain is famous for its serene natural scenery and profound Taoist cultural heritage. Numerous Taoist temples, such as Tianshi Cave and Shangqing Palace, dot the mountain, making it an important place to understand Chinese Taoist culture.

Within the scenic area, towering ancient trees and gurgling streams create a harmonious atmosphere. Visitors can experience the wisdom of ancient water conservancy projects, the charm of Taoist culture, and the beauty of natural scenery. It is recommended to spend two days exploring this area, with one day dedicated to Dujiangyan and another to Qingcheng Mountain, to fully appreciate the charm of this World Cultural Heritage site.
