Baiyun Mountain

Spot Introduction

Baiyun Mountain, with an elevation of 382 meters, is the highest peak in the urban area of Guangzhou. It is known as the “First Scenic Spot in Yangcheng”. The mountain is densely vegetated and rich in negative oxygen ions, serving as the “Green Lung of the City” for Guangzhou citizens to relax and recreate. The scenic area not only boasts beautiful natural scenery but also has a profound historical and cultural heritage.

Formed 150 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, Baiyun Mountain belongs to the typical Danxia landform. The mountain is mainly composed of red sandstone, which has formed a unique peak forest landscape through long-term weathering and erosion. There are over 30 peaks distributed across the mountain, with Moxing Ridge being the best spot to enjoy a panoramic view of Guangzhou. The vegetation coverage in the scenic area is as high as 95%, harboring more than 2000 plant species, including rare and ancient tree species like the tree fern and ginkgo.

As an important birthplace of Lingnan culture, Baiyun Mountain has a development history of over 2000 years. Since the Qin and Han dynasties, it has been a sacred place for Taoist cultivation. Numerous historical relics are still preserved on the mountain, such as the ruins of Baiyun Temple from the Song Dynasty, the stone inscriptions of Moxing Ridge from the Ming Dynasty, and Mingzhu Tower from the Qing Dynasty. Many literati and poets have left a wealth of poems and songs here, making Baiyun Mountain one of the symbols of Lingnan culture.

In recent years, the Baiyun Mountain scenic area has undergone continuous upgrades and renovations, improving infrastructure such as hiking trails and viewing platforms. The scenic area features several thematic gardens, including Yuntai Garden and Mingchun Valley, showcasing the essence of Lingnan garden art. Additionally, Baiyun Mountain serves as an important ecological education base in Guangzhou, with various science exhibition halls introducing the animal and plant resources as well as geological features of the Lingnan region.

As a city card of Guangzhou, Baiyun Mountain is not only a natural scenic area but also a cultural landmark carrying the memories of Guangzhou.
