Gulangyu Island
Spot Introduction
Gulangyu Island is a scenic area known as a seaside garden, renowned for its unique historical style, musical atmosphere, and exhibition of international architecture. The island boasts a collection of architectural styles from various countries, earning it the nickname “Exhibition of International Architecture.” Additionally, it is known as the hometown of music, with the highest density of pianos in the country.
The history of Gulangyu Island can be traced back to the Song Dynasty. After the signing of the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, it became a trading port, attracting consulates from 13 countries including Britain, the United States, France, and Japan. The island is home to over 1000 buildings in various styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque, forming a unique “Exhibition of International Architecture” landscape.
As an island of music, Gulangyu has nurtured many musicians. The residents of the island have a high level of musical accomplishment, and the piano density here ranks first in the country. The annual Gulangyu Piano Festival attracts music lovers from around the world. Strolling on the island, you can hear the melodious sound of the piano everywhere, feeling the strong artistic atmosphere.
The island also preserves the complete traditional culture of southern Fujian, such as Nanyin music and Gaojia opera, which are intangible cultural heritages. Meanwhile, Gulangyu Island is also an important cultural intersection in modern Chinese history, witnessing the collision and fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. In 2017, Gulangyu Island was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site, becoming China’s 52nd World Heritage site.
