Jingpo Lake Scenic Area

Spot Introduction

Jingpo Lake Scenic Area is China’s largest alpine quake lake, renowned for its spectacular Diaoshuilou Falls and the exquisite scenery of the lake and mountains. Here, you can find unique volcanic geological remains, abundant ecological resources, and cultural landscapes.

Formed about 10,000 years ago due to volcanic eruptions, Jingpo Lake came into being when volcanic lava blocked the Mudan River. The lake, situated at an elevation of 350 meters, stretches 45 kilometers from north to south, reaches six kilometers wide at its broadest point, and covers an area of 95 square kilometers. At its deepest, the lake reaches 62 meters. The water is crystal clear, surrounded by mountains, with a forest coverage rate of over 85%.

Within the scenic area, well-preserved volcanic geological remains such as volcanic craters, lava platforms, and volcanic bombs can be found, making it a natural museum for studying volcanic geology. The area is also a habitat for rare animals like Siberian tigers and sika deer, showcasing rich biodiversity.

Beyond its unique natural landscapes, Jingpo Lake also embodies profound cultural heritage. It is one of the birthplaces of the Manchu people, preserving rich Manchu folk culture. The Jingpo Lake Tourism Cultural Festival, held every summer, exhibits unique Manchu songs and dances, traditional handicrafts, and specialty foods.

The famous Diaoshuilou Falls within the scenic area is 40 meters wide and drops 20 meters, displaying a magnificent sight. During winter, the frozen falls form a breathtaking icefall spectacle. Additionally, the lake is dotted with numerous islands of various sizes, each with its own characteristics, like pearls scattered across the blue waves.
