Yuelu Mountain

Spot Introduction

Yuelu Mountain is a significant cultural landscape in Hunan Province, renowned for its cultural heritage represented by the Yuelu Academy. This place not only boasts profound cultural depths but also offers exquisite natural scenery, making it a popular destination for Changsha citizens to relax and explore. Since ancient times, Yuelu Mountain has been a gathering spot for scholars and poets, with historical figures such as Zhu Xi and Wang Yangming giving lectures here, leaving a rich cultural legacy.

Located on the west bank of the Xiang River and standing at an elevation of 300.8 meters, Yuelu Mountain is one of the 72 peaks of the South Sacred Mountain, Hengshan. The ancient trees tower towards the sky, and the scenery varies throughout the four seasons: spring brings blooming mountain flowers, summer offers shady green cover, autumn paints the forests in layers of color, and winter transforms the landscape into a silver-clad wonderland. As a national scenic area, Yuelu Mountain integrates natural landscapes with cultural attractions, earning the title of “The First Mountain of Hu-Xiang Culture.”

The history of Yuelu Mountain can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty when the predecessor of Yuelu Academy was established. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Yuelu Academy became one of the four major academies in China, nurturing a large number of scholars and intellectuals. The Song Dynasty Neo-Confucianist Zhu Xi once lectured here, initiating the “Yuelu School of Thought.” In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Yuelu Mountain further emerged as the center of Hu-Xiang culture, where thinkers like Wang Fuzhi and Wei Yuan wrote and expounded their theories.

Apart from its rich cultural heritage, Yuelu Mountain also boasts unique natural landscapes. The mountain is home to over 3,000 plant species, including rare and precious tree varieties. Scenic spots such as Aiwan Pavilion, Lushan Temple, and Yunlu Palace are scattered throughout the area, complementing the natural beauty. From the mountaintop, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Changsha, with the Xiang River resembling a ribbon and the scenic Orange Island lying within full view.
