Zhangjiajie

Spot Introduction

Zhangjiajie is famous for its unique quartz sandstone peak forest landform, known as “Three Thousand Exotic Peaks, Eight Hundred Elegant Waters.” Here, you can find not only spectacular natural landscapes but also rich biological resources and the cultural heritage of ethnic minorities such as Tujia and Bai.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China’s first national forest park, was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1992. The quartz sandstone peak forest here was formed 380 million years ago and has evolved through long-term geological movements and weathering erosion into the present spectacular pillar formations. The highest peak, Tianmen Mountain, stands at 1518.6 meters and boasts the world’s longest alpine passenger ropeway.

As a globally important biodiversity reserve, Zhangjiajie harbors over 3,000 plant species and 500 animal species, including rare plants like the Chinese dove tree and ginkgo, as well as protected animals such as the clouded leopard and macaque. This region also served as the inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie “Avatar,” attracting a large number of domestic and international tourists every year.

Beyond its unique natural landscapes, Zhangjiajie also preserves a wealth of ethnic minority cultures. The Tujia and Bai ethnic groups, among others, have inhabited this region for generations, shaping distinctive folk customs. Visitors can enjoy traditional performances such as the Tujia hand-waving dance and Maogusi, as well as sample authentic Tujia cuisine.
