Wuyi Mountain
Scenic Spot Introduction
Famous for its “extraordinary beauty in the southeast,” Wuyi Mountain is a renowned scenic area in China and a sacred place for Taoism and tea culture. The scenic area is known for its Jiuqu Stream, 36 peaks, and 99 rocks, among which Tianyou Peak and Yunv Peak are the most spectacular, and the Dahongpao Tea Garden is even more famous.
Wuyi Mountain is a world cultural and natural dual heritage site, covering a total area of 999.75 square kilometers and featuring a unique Danxia landform. It is not only a national nature reserve but also one of China’s first key scenic spots. The scenic area preserves a complete mid-subtropical forest ecosystem with extremely rich biodiversity, earning it the reputation of being the “window to the world’s biodiversity.”
As one of the birthplaces of Chinese tea culture, Wuyi Mountain has nurtured the world-renowned Dahongpao tea. The tea gardens here are built against the mountains, forming a unique tea mountain landscape with layers upon layers. The craft of making Wuyi rock tea has been listed in the national intangible cultural heritage, attracting many tea culture lovers to pay homage every year.
Wuyi Mountain is also a famous Taoist mountain with profound cultural heritage. The scenic area preserves many ancient buildings and cliff inscriptions, among which the most famous is the Wuyi Studio founded by Zhu Xi during the Song Dynasty. This place is also one of the important birthplaces of Chinese Neo-Confucianism, leaving a rich cultural heritage.
The Jiuqu Stream is the soul of Wuyi Mountain, winding for 15 kilometers with steep peaks standing on both sides, forming a natural landscape painting. Taking a bamboo raft to drift down the Jiuqu Stream, you can enjoy the stunning scenery of “curving mountains and winding streams.” The stream is crystal clear, and the vegetation on both banks is dense. Sometimes, you can see egrets flying, forming a beautiful picture of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
