As a World Natural Heritage site, the geological structure of the Three Parallel Rivers area is exceptional. The three rivers flow parallel within a distance of less than 100 kilometers, with the closest point being only 18.6 kilometers apart, creating a spectacular scene where “the rivers flow parallel without converging.” The geological evolution history of this region can be traced back 40 million years, making it a natural laboratory for studying plate tectonics and geological evolution.

The Three Parallel Rivers area is home to multiple ethnic groups, including the Tibetan, Lisu, and Naxi, among 16 ethnic minorities. Each ethnic group has retained its unique cultural traditions, such as the Tibetan’s circumambulation of mountains and the Lisu’s knife-pole festival. This area was also an important node of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, witnessing the prosperity of ancient trade and commerce culture.
