Maijishan Grottoes

Spot Introduction

The Maijishan Grottoes, founded during the Later Qin period (AD 384-417), are among the Four Great Grottoes of China. After continuous construction through various dynasties such as the Sixteen Kingdoms, Northern Wei, Sui, and Tang, there are now 221 existing grottoes with over 10,000 clay sculptures and more than 1,300 square meters of wall paintings. Renowned for its exquisite clay sculpture art, it is known as the “Oriental Sculpture Gallery.”

The artistic characteristics of the Maijishan Grottoes are distinct, with its clay sculptures known for their realism, vivid expressions, and smooth, natural clothing lines. The sculptures from the Northern Wei period are elegant and graceful, while those from the Tang and Sui dynasties are full-bodied and rounded, reflecting different artistic styles of different eras. The grottoes also preserve a wealth of exquisite wall paintings covering Buddhist stories, sutra illustrations, and patron portraits, providing valuable material for studying ancient painting art.

As a world cultural heritage site, the preservation of the Maijishan Grottoes is highly prioritized. In recent years, digital technology has been utilized to complete digital acquisition of several key caves, establishing a “Digital Maijishan” resource library. Simultaneously, conservation projects such as grotto reinforcement and wall painting restoration have been carried out to ensure the continual inheritance of this artistic treasure.

Visiting the Maijishan Grottoes offers a unique cultural experience. Visitors can climb along the cliff-side pathways to admire the exquisite grotto art up close. To protect the cultural relics, some caves have limited visitor access, and advance reservations are recommended. The scenic area also features the Maijishan Art Gallery, which utilizes cultural relic displays and multimedia technology to help visitors better understand the history and artistic value of the grottoes.

The Maijishan Grottoes not only represent a temple of Buddhist art but also serve as a testament to the civilization of the ancient Silk Road.
