Qinghai Lake Scenic Area
Spot Introduction
Qinghai Lake is China’s largest inland saltwater lake and an important ecotourism destination. With an elevation of 3196 meters and an area of 4583 square kilometers, the lake boasts deep blue waters surrounded by vast grasslands, making it an ideal place to appreciate the natural beauty of the plateau and experience Tibetan culture. Known as the pearl of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Qinghai Lake is not only a significant wetland ecosystem in China but also a world-renowned habitat for migratory birds. Every year, it attracts tens of thousands of rare birds such as bar-headed geese and brown-headed gulls to breed and thrive here.
Formed 200,000 years ago, Qinghai Lake is a tectonic fault lake whose water mainly comes from surface runoff and lake precipitation. With a high salt content, the lake exhibits a unique deep blue color that changes hues under sunlight, earning it the nickname “Sapphire of the Plateau.” The lake is rich in naked carp, a unique fish species of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with significant scientific research value.
The area surrounding the lake is home to ethnic minorities such as Tibetans and Mongolians, who maintain unique folk cultures. The annual Tour of Qinghai Lake International Cycling Race, held in summer, is the world’s highest-altitude international road cycling event and has become an essential cultural attraction of Qinghai Lake. The fields of rapeseed flowers near the lake are a photographer’s paradise, where golden blossoms contrast beautifully with the deep blue waters, creating a stunning natural painting.
Recognized as a national nature reserve, Qinghai Lake was listed in the “Directory of International Important Wetlands” in 2005 and rated as a national 5A-level tourist attraction in 2011.
